There’s lots to do around Trani, and we spent our time doing day trips from there.
My criteria for ‘nice towns’ = somewhere that:Firstly, GREAT blog name! Here are photos of each so you can get a feel for what they’re like.For the general traveller wanting to see the best of Puglia, I’d recommend staying in Trani (3 nights), Polignano a Mare (4 nights), Lecce (3-4 nights) and Otranto (2 nights), then go to Matera in Basilicata (2 nights). We would recommend one centrally located in the Valle d’Itria, and a second in the Salento.Do you want to soak up the sun or a lively atmosphere, or maybe both?
In an apartment, we can leave at 7:00am and have coffee and crostata in whatever town we are going to first on that day.In Ostuni, we had our son, daughter-in-law, 3-year-old grandson and 5-month-old granddaughter with us, so we had a strict rule not to go to any town that was farther than 45 minutes away. The best place to base yourself in Puglia is a trullo and Trulli Stella is a little off the beaten track, surrounded by farmland and olive groves. If you choose a small town as your base, you will spend the majority of your daylight hours traveling to other places. Perhaps 4 nights in Trani would be better. In Puglia there are many masserias... similar to an agriturismo in other parts of Italy.

Answer 1 of 13: We are planning on spending a few days in Puglia at the end of our trip to Italy. Some visitors would consider this a positive feature, but I want to be immersed in italianità when I am there! Do you know whether there are good beaches near Trani? It is 2 hours to some places, like Matera, but manageable. To me, it's sometimes a big advantage NOT to stay in a B&B where they give you breakfast ---- even though the breakfasts are great and the hosts are superbly hospitable and fun, we find that we are not be able to leave on a daytrip much earlier than 9:30am.
