and this kid with his own sticks raised them up!! According to rock and roll legend, on November 20, 1973, during the first show of The Who’s “Quadrophenia” tour, Keith Moon passed out on stage after taking a handful of horse tranquilizers and washing them down with brandy. Kind of hard to believe he kept it together as long as he did – both at this concert, and in his life in general. In November 1973, Scot Halpin, a 19-year-old kid, scalped tickets to The Who concert in San Francisco, California. When Moon returned to the stage 30 minutes later, the band started playing "Magic Bus" -- but Moon again passed out, and the band played "See Me, Feel Me" without drums. It was November 20, 1973, when The Who opened their first U.S. tour in two years at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. After climbing behind his kit, Moon was injected with a shot of cortisone in the ankle. What could have been more surreal and enticing for a fan than the sight of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, and John Entwistle of The Who conferring upon you the sacred duty of maintaining the beat in the absence of their regular drummer? For his performance, the band gave him a tour jacket. Throughout his performance, Moon was erratic. He played two Howlin’ Wolf covers: "Smokestack Lightning" and "Spoonful." But despite that, Keith Moon, the band's drummer, had a case of the nerves.
Halpin mounted the stage, settled into Moon's drum kit, and began confidently playing the blues jam "Smoke Stacked Lighting" that soon segued into "Spoonful."
Although he only played for 30 minutes, he was wiped out and even more impressed with Moon’s abilities.Moon managed to put in a subpar performance until the 15th song. His time as the band’s drummer ended with The Who original “Naked Eye.” After that song, Halpin took a bow with the band.
:)Halpin was the guy for the job, right time, right place– once in a lifetime event on film!
I was hoping to see Halpin play! We never spam. Who? ... when Moon passed out … It was a way of testing the kid out. Did not know him but I can remember hearing Pete clearly say Can anybody play the drums? Great night…great memory,,, Long live rock!!
Keith John Moon (23 August 1946 – 7 September 1978) was an English drummer for the rock band the Who.He was noted for his unique style and his eccentric, often self-destructive behaviour. Meanwhile, Artemus Pyle, the drummer for the opening band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, was backstage and explained that he couldn’t play with The Who because he didn’t know the songs.Moon had arrived at the show with a young female and was a bit jittery.
