This is just the beginning of fire season in the state. The White Wing fire near Whittmann that burned over 2,700 acres in eight days was officially 100% contained on June 6, according to the Arizona State Forestry.Fire crews will be reduced over next few days but some will remain to assure full containment, officials said.Heavy smoke and fog on the State Route 87 is expected and motorists are encouraged to prepare for dense smoke with low visibility between mileposts 283 and 293. The fire, which was caused by lightning, had burned more than 8,600 acres in the region. Many of 2019's fires were caused by lightning striking the dry brush such as the Coldwater Fire, Hoyley Fire and the Maroon Fire. The train derailed in the Arizona city of Tempe as it crossed a bridge over Tempe Town Lake at around 6:15am.Many of them were carrying lumber, but some of the carriages contained tanks full of flammable liquid.See today's front and back pages, download the newspaper, order back issues and use the historic Daily Expressnewspaper archive. It is understood around 100 emergency service personnel, including firefighters, police, and paramedics, attended the scene. In addition to the fire, the south side of the bridge collapsed, causing some carriages to fall down into an empty park underneath.Aerial footage of the incident posted to Twitter shows huge plumes of smoke rising from the bridge, with a line of fire along its length. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, and Tempe police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.City residents told local media the railroad bridge affected by the fire was over 100 years old.One resident told local media the incident looked “like a scene from hell”.Between eight and 10 of the train carriages are believed to have been affected by the blaze.Transport restrictions are in place in the city, though bus services are transporting passengers around the scene.Local news size AZCentral reports the spill could have “significant consequences for fish and wildlife downstream” if the chemicals got into the lake.Tim McMahan, a spokesman for US train operator Union Pacific, told reporters two of the tank carriages that fell from the bridge contained cyclohexanone. He added emergency service personnel had moved their focus to containing a hazardous material leak from one of the train carriages.None of these tank carriages were involved in the fire, but at least one of them has leaked, officials have said.It has been confirmed this is the chemical leaking out of one of the carriages, and concerns have been raised regarding what effect this might have on the environment.According to US government chemical database CameoChemicals, cyclohexanone is a highly flammable colourless liquid sometimes used to make nylon.Tempe Fire Chief Greg Ruiz said late last night UK time: “The fire has been knocked down and the crews continue to address any hotspots along the bridge.”Mr Ruiz added state officials had been monitoring air quality and found there was “no imminent hazard”.According to CNN, the freight train was headed from Pheonix to Tucson – both cities in Arizona.A number of train carriages were caught up in the blaze, sparking concerns about their contents.
